Davenport Psychology helps homeschool kids in Sarasota, Venice, and across Florida build the social and emotional skills that carry over into every other part of life. Our small-group Mindful Minds (ages 7 to 12) and Mindful Explorers (ages 4 to 7) cohorts use mindfulness, structured play, and social-emotional learning to grow focus, emotional awareness, and self-advocacy. Led by Dr. Keri Downs, Licensed Psychologist. Step Up FES-UA and PEP scholarships welcome. Self-pay always. Schedule a Free 15-Minute Consultation Call (941) 702-2457

Two Mindful Cohorts, One Goal: Build Confidence

Each cohort runs a five-session arc with age-banded curriculum designed for where each child is developmentally. Small groups, doctoral-level facilitation, parent take-home tools, no diagnosis required to enroll. Our current in-person cohort is the Skye Ranch Homeschool Program, five Friday mornings at The Hub at Skye Ranch in Sarasota.

Mindful Minds (ages 7 to 12)

Big Idea: Using mindfulness to improve focus, flexibility, and emotional awareness.

Five sessions:
  1. Focus and Awareness: holding attention and noticing when it drifts
  2. Flexible Thinking: telling a first thought from a checked fact
  3. Emotional Awareness: recognizing and naming emotions in self and others
  4. Managing Big Feelings: strategies for strong feelings and thoughtful responses
  5. Finding Flow: building a personal plan for continued practice

Mindful Explorers (ages 4 to 7)

Big Idea: Learning to notice thoughts, feelings, and the world around us.

Five sessions:
  1. Mindful Noticing: five-senses noticing, indoors and outdoors
  2. Identifying Emotions: naming feelings and where they show up in the body
  3. Worry Clouds and Calm Clouds: thoughts come and go, slow belly breathing
  4. Self-Control and Turn-Taking: stop, think, choose; movement games in pairs
  5. My Mindfulness Toolbox: gathering favorite activities to take home

How scholarship payment works: you reserve the full amount in your EMA account first, and payment is requested after each session has been delivered, never before. Eligibility is set by the Step Up service category a service falls under, so it can differ from one line above to the next.

Step Up FES-UA (Family Empowerment Scholarship for Unique Abilities)

Covers psychotherapy and counseling by a licensed psychologist, psychoeducational testing, ADHD evaluations, gifted and twice-exceptional evaluations, and certain specialized group services for students with a documented eligible diagnosis. Funds route through your Education Market Assistant (EMA) account.

Step Up PEP (Personalized Education Program)

Covers our Mindful Minds and Mindful Explorers small-group cohorts under the Home Education Instructional Program category. Our Skye Ranch Homeschool Enrichment listing is live on the Step Up Empowered Marketplace. PEP families can reserve the full amount now, then request payment to us in EMA after each session has been delivered. Psychoeducational evaluations and re-evaluations are payable under the Step Up Testing and Assessments category, which covers PEP as well as FES-UA.

Self-Pay

Available for any service. We accept cash, personal checks, Zelle to 941-321-1971, and HSA or FSA checks. Some families combine scholarship funds with self-pay for services or tiers that scholarships do not cover.

Out-of-Network

We work with most major insurance plans as an out of network provider. We provide a superbill on request for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Medicare-eligible patients are self-pay (our psychologists are opted-out of Medicare). Not sure which scholarship applies? Schedule a free 15-minute consultation and we will walk you through which products are eligible for which scholarship and how to route payment.

Why Homeschool Families Choose Davenport Psychology

Doctoral Licensed Psychologists

Every clinician holds a Florida PY-prefix license under Chapter 490, with a Psy.D. or Ph.D. That license category covers diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, independent practice across populations, and the diagnostic letters families need for IEP, 504, and college accommodation requests.

Five Doctoral Psychologists, One Practice

When you call Davenport Psychology, you reach a team of specialists. If the right fit for your child is a different psychologist on our team, we route the consult internally. You do not start over at a new practice.

PSYPACT Reach

We see families in person at our Sarasota and Venice offices and online across Florida and 40 plus PSYPACT-eligible states. Traveling and dual-state homeschool families can keep working with the same psychologist year-round.

Step Up Scholarship Fluency

We route FES-UA Specialized Services for clinical work and PEP for small-group cohorts. Your free 15-minute consult is where we walk you through which scholarship covers which service for your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Mindful Minds and Mindful Explorers?Mindful Minds (ages 7 to 12) focuses on attention, flexible thinking, and managing big feelings through mindfulness practices. Mindful Explorers (ages 4 to 7) introduces the same core ideas through play, body-awareness games, and storytelling. Each cohort runs its own five-session arc with age-appropriate activities. Both are led by Dr. Keri Downs.
Are your services a good fit for unschoolers, classical co-ops, Christian co-ops, Jewish day-school hybrids, or nature-school families?Yes. We work with families across the homeschool spectrum. The clinical work does not depend on your curriculum choice.
What is FES-UA and how does it work with Davenport Psychology? The Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA) is a Florida scholarship administered by Step Up for Students. Families of students with an eligible documented diagnosis can direct scholarship dollars to approved providers. Eligible Davenport Psychology services include psychoeducational testing, ADHD evaluations, and certain specialized group programs. Those evaluations sit under the Step Up Testing and Assessments category, which lists FES-UA, FTC, FES-EO and PEP among its eligible programs, so PEP families can use them too. Therapy and counseling are different: they fall under Specialized Services, which is FES-UA only. Ask us during your free 15-minute consult and we will walk you through which products are eligible and how the EMA payment routing works.
What is PEP and how does it work with the Mindful Minds and Mindful Explorers cohorts? The Personalized Education Program (PEP) is a Florida scholarship for homeschool families administered by Step Up for Students. Our Mindful Minds and Mindful Explorers cohorts fall under the Home Education Instructional Program category, which is eligible for PEP funding. Our homeschool listing is live on the Step Up Empowered Marketplace, so PEP families can reserve funds now.
Does FES-UA cover individual therapy?Yes. FES-UA’s Specialized Services category covers psychotherapy or counseling by a Florida Department of Health licensed psychologist, alongside other approved services. PEP does not cover individual therapy. We can talk through your specific situation during the consult.
Does my child need a formal diagnosis to join the Mindful Minds or Mindful Explorers groups? No. The cohorts are open to homeschooled children ages 4 to 12 whose parents want them to build social-emotional skills like focus, emotional awareness, and self-advocacy. No diagnosis is required to enroll. Self-pay and PEP-funded families are both welcome.
Can the cohorts meet at our co-op?Sometimes. We partner with co-ops in the Sarasota area when there is interest from a critical mass of families. Ask us during your consult and we will walk you through how the partnership works.
What is the difference between executive function coaching and ADHD therapy?Executive function coaching teaches concrete skills like planning, time management, and task-switching. ADHD therapy treats the underlying condition and includes evaluation, evidence-based treatment, and coordination with your child’s medical providers. Many families do both. We can help you decide which fits your situation.
Do you write letters for IEP, 504, or college-accommodation requests?Yes. Our doctoral-level Licensed Psychologists write the diagnostic and recommendation letters that schools, colleges, and standardized-test bodies require.
Can we combine self-pay with a Step Up scholarship?Often, yes. Some families use scholarship dollars for the testing portion and self-pay for ongoing therapy that scholarships do not cover. We will walk you through the routing on your consult call.
Can homeschool families across Florida work with you through telehealth?Yes. We provide telehealth across Florida, and several of our psychologists hold PSYPACT certification, which allows them to provide telehealth to clients in 40 plus states. For traveling homeschool families and dual-state families, this means continuity year-round.
