What is Telehealth?

Telehealth, sometimes referred to as telemedicine, is a method of delivering healthcare services through digital technology. This can include live video chats, secure messaging, and remote monitoring. It allows healthcare providers to care for patients remotely when in-person visits are not feasible.

Our Telehealth Services

At Davenport Psychology, we offer a range of telehealth services. These include:

  • Individual Therapy: One-on-one sessions with a licensed psychologist.
  • Parent Coaching: Coaching for parenting with a licensed psychologist. We can help with some of the hard parts of parenting.
  • Child Therapy: Appointments with your child or with parents to help with emotions and behaviors that get in the way of thriving.
  • Couples Counseling: Therapy sessions designed to improve communication and resolve conflicts within a relationship.
  • Psychological Testing: Comprehensive assessments conducted remotely.
  • Sports Psychology: Mental coaching and therapy for athletes.

Benefits of Telehealth

Telehealth offers numerous benefits:

  • Convenience: No need to travel. Receive care from the comfort of your own home.
  • Accessibility: Ideal for those living in remote areas or with limited mobility.
  • Flexibility: Appointments can often be scheduled outside of traditional office hours.

Recent Research

  1. A report by the American Psychological Association (APA) titled “Telehealth proves its worth” states that even after the pandemic ends, telehealth appears poised to stay. According to APA’s 2021 COVID-19 Practitioner Survey of U.S. psychologists, a whopping 96% of psychologists who responded said that telehealth is effective therapeutically, and 97% said that it should remain post-pandemic1. The number of clinicians using telehealth with at least some patients also continues to grow, from 33% in 2020 to 50% in 20211. More clinicians practicing telehealth will lead to increased access to much-needed care1.
  2. Another article by the APA titled “Telehealth is here to stay. Psychologists should equip themselves to offer it” suggests that psychologists who offer both in-person and virtual services are poised to meet increased demand for flexible, accessible mental health care2. In 2020, psychologists responded to the onset of the Covid -19 pandemic by making a nearly universal pivot to telehealth2. This rapid and widespread adoption was largely enabled by the federal government’s declaration of a public health emergency (PHE), which prompted several significant policy changes that made telehealth more feasible for both patients and providers2.
  3. A study titled “How well is telepsychology working?” found that telepsychology delivered by video and phone is effective for depression, anxiety and adjustment disorder3.
  4. A foundational study titled “New Study: The Advantages & Benefits of Telehealth” offers the most extensive examination of psychotherapy treatment disruptions in the United States. It compares the nine months preceding and following the onset of COVID-19 and identifies some of the most influential benefits of telehealth4.
