Local Resources for Gifted Students:

Gifted Programs

Gifted programs are available in several schools across both Sarasota and Manatee counties. These include Pine View School, Fruitville Elementary, Booker Middle School, Sarasota Middle School, Venice Elementary School, Laurel Nokomis School, Toledo Blade Elementary, and Woodland Middle School in Sarasota County, and various schools in Manatee County. The School District of Manatee County provides support for a continuum of services, in a variety of settings, for Students with Disabilities (SWD) who are eligible for special education services.

Testing Requirements

In Sarasota County, referrals to the gifted programs are generally made by classroom teachers or by parent request. Students who pass the screening will be referred to the School Psychologist for an evaluation. The criteria for eligibility requires an IQ score of two standard deviations or more above the mean. Parents have the option to seek out a private psychological evaluation (IQ) at their own expense.

In Manatee County, the School District requires a 130 IQ for a student to be part of a gifted program. Some students are accepted with a slightly lower IQ depending on socioeconomic concerns. The IQ score is vital, but having a high IQ and great grades doesn’t mean a student automatically is enrolled in a gifted program.

Deadlines

For the 2025-2026 gifted magnet application, the deadlines are as follows:

  • January 17, 2025: Deadline to request gifted screening and evaluation for gifted magnet consideration completed by the districted school.
  • March 28, 2025: Deadline to inform the districted school that a private evaluation will be submitted.

Understanding ADHD and ADD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults1. It is characterized by persistent problems such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior2. ADHD is often first identified in school-aged children when it leads to disruption in the classroom or problems with schoolwork3.

On the other hand, Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD) is an outdated term for what experts now call ADHD4. The term ADD first appeared in the third edition of the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-3),” a reference manual that helps mental health professionals diagnose mental health conditions4. In 1994, doctors decided all forms of attention-deficit disorder would be called “attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder,” or ADHD, even if the person wasn’t hyperactive5.

ADHD Symptoms

ADHD primarily causes symptoms related to inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, or a combination of both6. With ADHD, someone may experience difficulties paying attention and staying organized, excess fidgeting or restlessness, and trouble with self-control or impulsive behaviors6.

ADHD Symptoms in Women

ADHD symptoms in women can include difficulty with time management, disorganization, feeling overwhelmed, history of anxiety and depression, and difficulty with money management7. Women with ADHD may also experience internal restlessness, anxiety, forgetfulness, mood swings, low self-esteem, and procrastination8.

ADHD Coach for Kids

ADHD coaching is a practical intervention that specifically targets the core impairments of ADHD such as planning, time management, goal setting, organization, and problem-solving9. Although predominately used for college students and adults, some coaching programs have also been offered for adolescents with ADHD9. Coaches help individuals with ADHD learn how the symptoms of ADHD play out in their daily lives9.
